Now that I have left the farm I think it is safe to reveal the true nature of this seemingly innocent operation.
Posing as a successful mini corporation which has cornered a niche market in the cutthroat economic environment of Mara, the surrounding centres of Salmon Arm, Sicamous and Revelstoke, and conveniently located right next to the thriving metropolis off Grinrod, WildFlight Farm is in fact a friendly, family run business hell-bent on peddling to the local community, fresh organic produce at a reasonable price.
Louise and Herman Bruns who are the reputed owners of the business (and who declined an interview) are in fact just the front-persons for this nefarious operation. One ringleader is this man, none other than the notorious Uncle Ed (captured here arriving for a secret meeting with Mr. Bruns). He is often seen patrolling the grounds of the farm, checking up on the maltreated (and malnourished) employees. His knowledge of vegetables, young krouts and young ladies is unsurpassed.
As I spent more time on the farm and my investigation continued I managed to infiltrate further to the very core of this operation. And to my shock and horror who I found to be at the pinacle of the pyramid of power was none other than Gila ‘the Hun’ Bruns (Hi Gila J!). (The film I took of her mysteriously vanished and I became gravely ill for weeks after I took it). Head of the ‘Family’ this lady is responsible for the overseeing of all that transpires in the seemingly sleepy backwater of the Mara peninsula. Even the surrounding dairy farm is under her control, run by the son and daughter in-law combination only known as Q and D. Don’t even get me started on these two.
Just like the infamous Illuminati, the true power of the hierarchy lies in the bloodlines. H & L’s children Ari and Elena are the terrible twosome instructed to carry out many of the heinous tasks required to keep such an operation in…operation. Ari ‘the egg collector’ is himself the master of an army of ferocious chickens who will cluck you to death if you dare set foot in their coop. Elena’s danger lies in her seemingly cute and innocent antics, carried out merely to distract you from the fact that she should really have been in bed and hour earlier. These two protégés are set to become leaders of their own one day, and by them I fear that not even Gila’s rein is secure.
These are some of the unsavoury characters that are found lurking around the fields and packing shed:
Some highlights of my time in Mara:
1. Working! Just day to day work on the farm was an amazing and funny experience. We laughed so much and I learned so much from the bosses and crew. I did not know what to expect, but i did not expect to make such great friends and become part of such an amazing community. This is a photo of the whole crew and the Bruns family at the height of the season.
2. Cooking dinner for the family once a week. You can't go wrong with fresh ingredients like that. I really enjoyed following the season and using whatever was available at the time. It really makes you appreciate a particular food when it is only available at its own special time of the year.
3. Learning how to bake bread. Therese was kind enough to teach me to bake and i made my own bread for most of the season. Yum Yum.
4. Hiking the cliffs and the Monashees.
5. Playing golf with Ari and Quentin and Daniella. We played at Birchdale, the local par 3. It was short but sweet.
6. Having a nap on the ledge next to this Inukshuk at the top of a mountain, at the end of a long hike with the Bruns family (not as dangerous as it looks).
7. Going to see the Salmon Run with
my friends from Vancouver Sandy and Sonja.
8. Hanging out with Kate's family.
9. Swimming in the river at the end of a hot day.
10. Going for a midnight walk with Shasta in the snow.
11. Meeting a Black Bear on the road, in the dark, on my bike. It was scared off by my squeeky brakes! Also working not 150 metres away from bears out in the fields... and watching bears swimming in the river at lunch time.

12. Riding to the Mushroom festival in Sicamous and doing a magical wild mushroom tour. Then eating the harvest.13. The Roots and Blues.
14. Touring an Okanagan winery, complete with a pyramid cellar, and buying fresh fruit from some local growers with Todd.

Here is a photo ofAri, Louise and Elena taken by Herman. I am very much looking forward to visiting in the snow of winter. Thanks so much guys, see you soon...
