...Birthday Bowling.

Happy Birthday to me... I had a lovely birthday over here in Canada. Although i did miss you all very much. It seems like there is much activity back home, people getting engaged, married and breeding left right and centre! Congratulations to all those involved... It is great to watch (from a-far haha!). No seriously i have seen some beautiful pictures and had great news from many fronts.
So i had a lovely dinner for my birthday with some friends who couldn't make it to my bowling bonanza the folowing weekend. We went to a great resturaunt called East is East which has the best Chai Tea i have ever tasted, probably because i have never been to india. I booked this cool little booth and had a feast. Following dinner some of us went to a local Irish pub to show off our newly honed(?) dart throwing skills. We have a real dart board in our appartment now and me and my housemates often have battles ( i currently and very proudly hold the top score!) Not this night at the pub though... i ended up spending more time on the couch with a teddy(?) as i was very tired for some reason. For those who are wonering if i have developed a fetish for large stuffed animals i have no comment... they are adorable though aye? and soft
So, earlier that day (the 2nd of march for those who forgot) me and Braleigh took a trip to Stanley Park and the Vancouver Aquarium. I rode my beloved bike down to Stanley Park which is a rather large island/peninsula right off the side of downtown Vancouver. It is great to have a chunk of forest right in the middle of the city and right out in the middle of the harbour.
So we road around for a while, got tired and went to the aquarium. Got flashed by, then spat on by some Baluga whales. Man they are gross! All white and flabby, haha holy shit when you watch them swim under water they make you sick... Also got attacked by a MASSIVE sea lion. This thing was unimaginably large and he didn't like me one bit. We were just watching him through the glass and he suddenly lunged at me and bashed into the glass. then he stared right at me and blew all these bubbles at me, it was pretty hilarious but damn scary. I swear he could have broken that glass had he really wanted to... What else, oh yeah some sea otters who were pretty funny. and these freaky fish who were really long like a worm and stayed semi submerged in the sand, waving around and darting back and forth. I thought the amazonian exhibit was a little disapointing, although i didn't hold very high hopes for that part anyway.
They only seem to do 5 pin bowling over here. "What" you say? Yes shocking i know but they seem to prefer it. It took me so long to track down some ten pin lanes. I spent hours on the phone, searching high and low, ringing around, enquiring, trying to find a place that even knew what ten pin bowling was. Finally after much investigation and research i managed to track down 3 ten pin lanes, all by myself, with no help what so ever. It was a monumentous task but i got through. Anyway, so saturday rolled around and it was time for some bowling. It seems i had chosen the perfect activity for my birthday as no-one could match my skills. the only people who came close were my Aussie friend Cory (an Aussie called cory you say? only in canada...) and another aussie, William Shatner. She, she's ok. I started playing 5 pin at the same time. The ball is much smaller, about the size of a coconut, and you just cup it in your hand and chuck it down the lane. the pins are obviously much wider apart as there are only five of them. I managed to roll a strike and then pick up a spare on my first two goes before i was booted off the lane by my Canadian counterparts.
I had been unfairly accused of foot falting all night, just cause i was lighting up the lane! So on my final roll i made a point of sliding half way down and chucking from there... when i turned around my party were gathered around and my buddy mike had a cake, with candles light. It was truly a touching moment, the cake came fully equiped with suspiscious filling and pink lip gloss and a compact mirror. Just what i needed, it seems my new friends really understand me.
We finished the night at a quiet bar on commercial drive, which is kind of the fitzroy of Vanies, but not as busy. Sean insisted that i re-enact my drunken knee slide of several months earlier which left me crippled for days. So i took a run up, dug my heals in and launched myself onto the floorboards between the tables. Unfortunatley i launched a little late and ended up sliding right under these peoples table, bent back with my chin placed on the table top. they didn't even crack a smile. i said "sorry i slipped" and picked myself up, dusted off my knees and got on with my life.
Happy Birthday from all of you to me! YAY!

....By the way.
I got my working permit! So it looks like i will be staying in Canada for a while yet. I have applied for some research jobs over the summer and hopefully will be able to work out in the bush somewhere. If not i will be able to stay in Vancouver and will probably keep working with Todd doing landscaping, puls another job. There are some cool opportunities to live in some cool houses around here.
I finish my studies at the end of April and eagerly anticipate Jono's arrival then. Me and Todd have been talking up some island touring or maybe the Rockies. oh yeah, although it is fining up over here, it snowed again the other day. Apparently the boarding has been phenomenal. I am going to give it another go next weekend...
See ya.
